Letter to Voters
Dear Orange County residents:
I am asking for your vote for Orange County Commissioner for District 2 because I am committed to working for you to make Orange County a better place to live.
Our county is diverse – ranging from the rural farming areas of Cedar Grove and Efland, where I live, to the large college town of Chapel Hill.
We face many issues and challenges in education, economic development, land development and use, and human services. I have been working with county boards and agencies to help resolve these issues. Among the boards that I have served on over the past fifteen years are the Orange County Planning Board, Orange County Social Services Board, Orange County Task Force for Central Orange Senior Center Bond Drive, and Legal Aid of North Carolina Board.
I have come to understand that I would be in a better position to work to improve the quality of life for the residents of Orange County by serving on the Board of Orange County Commissioners. As your Commissioner, I pledge to work to relieve the tax burden on the residents of Orange County, to develop local jobs and encourage business development in Orange County, to improve our schools and ensure equitable funding, and to protect sustainable farms.
I am very concerned about the education of our children. Because I believe that everyone deserves equal opportunities to receive a solid education and that every child matters, I have volunteered as a reading and math tutor at Efland-Cheeks Elementary School every week for the past eight years. As your County Commissioner, I pledge to support equitable funding for all Orange County Schools.
The high price of gasoline has increased transportation costs and made us all understand that we must develop more jobs here in Orange County. If I am elected County Commissioner, I will encourage economic development in Orange County so that more residents can work near their homes. Not only will this improve the quality of living for residents by providing more family time, it will have the added advantage of raising revenues from commercial property and sales taxes, which in turn will relieve the tax burden on ordinary citizens.
Recreational programs for young people and mature adults, as well as senior citizens programs, are very important to the community. As your County Commissioner, I will actively support these programs as I have in the past.
Farming is an issue that I closely identify with as I was raised the oldest of seven children on a farm in Orange County. Consequently, I understand the struggles of farming. I also understand the value to the community when produce is grown locally. If I am elected County Commissioner, I pledge to protect the rights of our farmers. I believe that farmers and manufacturers can co-exist as long as we plan for growth.
I am committed to improving the quality of life for all citizens in Orange County. I believe that my experience and volunteer service have prepared me to serve as your County Commissioner.
I would be honored if you would vote for me in the June 24th runoff election. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Leo Allison
